Biography
When I was in preschool, my Dad asked me, "If you could travel the world or go to Kindergarten, which would you pick?" I responded, "School! I want to learn!" I have always wanted to learn, but now that I am older, I see that traveling the world would have simply been a different kind of classroom. My whole life as an educator and learner is summed up in that lesson: there is so much to learn and gain by talking with one another and always striving to expand our horizons and perspectives. The whole world is our classroom and we are all classmates.
I have been a teacher for over a decade in Sonoma County serving students from many different walks of life from high school to college at the SRJC. I am passionate about creating welcoming learning spaces that center students' strengths. I also work as a supervisor for pre-service teachers at SSU, and I am a doctoral candidate at SF State in their Educational Leadership for Social Justice Program. I am also the mother of three gorgeous, funny children who keep my heart and hands full.
The more I learn about learning, the more I see that it takes a truly brave, humble, open-minded, and open-hearted teacher to challenge the status quo of education. Our current system sometimes leaves people out, and my life's work is helping to create educational spaces that are welcoming and emancipatory for even just one more student, but hopefully for many.
