Michael Lewis, AMFT

Associate Marriage and Family Therapist #148485

Hello! My name is Michael. Thanks for taking some time to read about me. I hope that this little introduction helps you find what you need.

I am a Neurodivergent, person-centered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. I currently live in the Outer Sunset in San Francisco. I graduated from USF in May, 2024 with a Master's in Counseling Psychology. I received my associate number (148485) on July 31st, 2024. Being "person-centered" means that I work to build real relationships with real people who have real problems. I enjoy working with Neurodivergent people and practice with a trauma-informed approach. I assume that my clients are the experts on their own lives. I approach all client relationships with unconditional positive regard, empathy, and active listening.

Challenges & Obstacles I Work With:

The challenges and obstacles I work with are determined by the client. I believe that my clients are the experts of their own lives. Goals and objectives of therapy are determined in a collaborative conversation facilitated by me at the onset of therapy. I practice working with unconditional positive regard. I use a trauma informed approach and I am accepting of Neurodivergent perspectives. Some challenges that I work with include:

  • Figuring out what emotions are trying to say

  • Complex family trauma

  • Feelings of low self-worth or self-esteem

  • Bottling up emotions when they need to be expressed

  • Codependency

  • Low motivation

  • Feeling stuck

  • Masking emotions to fit in

Life Changes & Opportunities I Work With:

  • Deciding between in-person school versus online school

  • Helping clients learn what it means to choose for themselves

  • Partnering with clients as they decide on possible career changes

  • Normalizing complex emotions and accepting them

  • Providing a safe space to explore what it means to be neurodivergent

Interests:

Video Games

-I've been gaming since I was first able to hold a controller in my hands. I have many good memories playing games like Ratchet and Clank, Pokemon, Skyrim, Call of Duty, and so many more. I am always open to talking about what I am currently playing. I like to collect physical copies of games and I primarily game on a PlayStation. I have also built my own gaming computer.

Books (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Fiction, Non-Fiction, etc.)

-I love to read! I'm always reading something and if you see me, I most likely have a book in my bag. Some of my favorite authors include Brandon Sanderson, Stephen King, and Octavia Butler. My book collection is always growing, despite telling myself that I need to read the books I already have before getting more. Feel free to ask me about what I am reading!

Running

-I enjoy running and have completed multiple half-marathons, as well as one full marathon. While I run, I like to explore new music and listen to albums.

Music

-I'm the child of a Mom who loves disco and a Dad who loves guitar solos. I love music and I am always searching for new songs that I haven't heard before. I enjoy going to concerts and sharing music with people.

Writing

-I spend some time every day to write. Writing helps me to slow down and stay present. I do all of my writing on paper and I enjoy coming up with writing prompts that challenge me.
