I am…

I am a sister. I am a Tia. I am a Prima. I am the eldest daughter. I am a proud first-generation daughter of immigrants!

Para Mis Padres: In July of 1990, both my parents bravely crossed the U.S. and Mexico border in pursuit of both a better life and opportunity. Their journey to get here was not easy, and not a journey I wish upon anyone. A journey that they had to embark on not once, not twice, but three times. My parents taught me that the immigration story is a love story. They loved their families. They loved themselves. They loved my siblings and I with all their corazón before we were born. They loved a future that could only be imagined but worth the journey. My parents taught me that where there is sacrifice and courage you will also find love. I am the product of one of the largest sacrifices any human being can make. I am the daughter of immigrants! What you have to understand about me is that I just don’t do it for me. I do it for the ones that came before me. I do it for the ones I never got to meet. I do it for the ones that come after me. My purpose is so much bigger than me. It isn’t just my dream, it isn’t just the dream of my family, but it’s a dream and a symbol of hope to an entire culture. To the ones that come after me, keep dreaming with ambition and grace. There is nothing you cannot achieve! Para mis padres que cruzaron fronteras para que yo este Aqui!

I am an Ultra-Marathon Runner, Chingona, and Comadre to all!

The magic of the ultra-marathon is not the distance required to run on race day. It is the hundreds of miles of training that happen in the months before. It is the countless feelings, frustrations, and fears people work through while running down and up those lonesome trails, roads, hills, and mountains. It is the healing that takes place on the hardest of runs when your body tells your mind to stop, but your heart tells your spirit to keep going! I never thought I would become a runner, I did, and in the process my life became better because I found the self-care tool/coping skill that transformed my mental health!

My best advice to all my fellow chingonas, comadres, friends, and anyone out there on a healing journey…When your legs can’t run anymore, run with your heart and run deep! I see you, I believe in you, and I got you!
